Hello guys, it has been a while....
I know I said I’d post about the last week
of December, and it’s been almost a month now, but I’m back, yay!
Today I just came to share something with
you guys that you may have known but if you didn’t and are learning about it
today like I did, here it is. It is something called neuroplasticity, it is the
brain’s capacity to change and adapt in response to new things like learning
skills or injury mainly being active during the years of 5-21 years old as
those are the years where activities such as those stated happen more frequently. It involves making
new pathways in the brain, allowing us to experience and recover from those
injuries.
For example, let's say I hit a table corner
as I was walking towards it. That is a painful experience and something I would
not want my body to go through again, so my brain creates these neural
connections. The next time I walk in the direction of a table corner, I will
know not to walk directly towards it but shift away from it, so I do not get
hurt again. This sums up what neuroplasticity is.
I got introduced to this as I was researching
my Extended Essay which is just a 4000-word essay required by the IB that
explores one topic you are interested in, in your chosen subject in which mine
was biology. One research question I came across on the topic of neurology was,
“Investigate the role of serotonin on neuroplasticity in adolescence”. Like I
said it was my first time being introduced to the concept of neuroplasticity. I
do not think I will be exploring more on this research question, but it is one
that helped me learn more about neurology. I hope it did the same for you too!

P.S: This video also helped a lot with my
understanding of neuroplasticity, I recommend you watch it as well.
